The Original Chapter

For one year after the founding of the University of Rochester, student activity was limited to membership in one of two true literary societies. These literary societies met in rooms belonging to the college and as promoters of the intellectual improvement of their members, threw their doors open to any men who wished membership. However, with 1851, secret societies had found their place at Rochester and greatly hampered the livelihood of the literary groups. At first, the secret societies were able to control the appointment of officers and exclude neutrals from literary work. In response to the evils of secrecy, a number of individuals from the literary societies formed an anti-secret organization. However, the existence of this organization was quickly terminated by the secret fraternities. Some of those anti-secret men, however, were able to form a new literary club as a means of keeping their ideals alive.

Concepts

Our earliest brothers abhorred most of what they saw in their fraternity system. They felt the fraternities of that day were unquestionably harmful to its individual members and to the campus atmosphere in general. At that time they had but two choices - join the fraternity system, of which they disapproved, or go entirely alone as an ostracized independent. In reaction to this situation, our founding brothers met to determine if there might be another way. They wished to find a third alternative, combining the best of fraternal and independent life and eliminating the undesirable aspects of both. In their early conferences, our founding brothers soon learned that they individually shared common beliefs, concepts, and concerns. These concepts, which were to be woven through the fabric of Delta Upsilon, are enunciated in the form of our four simple, yet very profound principles:

The Advancement of Justice
The Development of Character
The Diffusion of Liberal Culture
The Promotion of Friendship

Traditions

Fraternity traditions often make up the fondest memories of a brothers' college years. As a non secret fraternity it is our pleasure to share a few of them with you here! We encourage you to ask a brother about any tradition and we guarantee that it will insight a wild story or three.

The Bell

After the initiation ceremony, the president rings the Delta Upsilon Bell. The bell is struck one time for each new brother. This particular tradition dates back to 1852 when the first brothers were initiated into DU at the U of R.

Hazing

Hazing is defined as any activity which is intended to be physically or mentally demeaning; or which places anyone in risk of personal injury, whether or not intended. A rule of thumb definition describes it as any act that you would be embarrassed or hesitant to tell your parents, friends, or peers about. If you have to wonder whether an act or statement is hazing, chances are it is. As described in the Cornerstone and other literature, Delta Upsilon Fraternity forbids hazing in any form within its chapters.

The programs and activities that you and your class will be participating in are not designed to demean or embarrass you in any way. If you are concerned that an event you are taking part in may be a form of hazing, you must report your feelings to one of the brothers. The assimilation process will stress education and growth over abuse and ridicule. It is designed to familiarize you with Delta Upsilon and prepare you for active and productive participation. What possible service could be done by abusing you for one semester?

Delta Upsilon does not find it necessary to depend on secret handshakes, mottoes, or seals to bind us together as a group and perpetuate the brotherhood. We are a true brotherhood, built on the foundations of trust, loyalty, responsibility, and respect. No injustice felt by a member of our brotherhood will be tolerated.
